Embroidery

As the year moved on, the group were asked to sign up for embroidery workshops if they wished. Our embroidery team and youth coordinator Michelle, then embarked on the preparation for the series of workshops. This began with pack preparation to ensure the young people had a variety of threads, beads and tools to express their vision.

Our embroidery team sent individual packs of silk thread, beads and needles so that the young people could take part in Zoom workshops between the studio and their homes. The tutorials began with showing how embroiderers transfer artwork, match colours and plan how to use beads. The McQueen team recorded step-by-step video demonstrations of stitching techniques, and followed up with one-to-one virtual conversations with Michelle and each young person to talk them through completing their individual designs and processes.

The result is twelve final embroideries on a printed linen or paper base. Each piece contains personal messages, hand stitching and beading created by the young people.
